Here are some trailers that caught our eye this week.
The Lost Bus
Apple TV +
Trailer Agency: Big Pic
Editor: Alex Wong
Somber music plays as a nervous bus driver (Matthew McConaughey) watches black clouds of smoke raging out of control. That’s the start to this terrific and terrifying trailer. Over the bus’ radio, we hear a dispatcher ask if anyone can pick up 23 kids stranded at an elementary school. McConaughey volunteers. America Ferrera plays a teacher wrangling the youngsters. Matthew needs to rescue his son, who is trapped in the heart of the fire. It ends with the bus rushing through wild and fearsome flames. Based on a story of the deadliest conflagration in California’s history. Hits select theaters Sept. 19 and streams on Oct. 3.
GOAT
Sony Pictures
Trailer Agency: Transit
This teaser opens with Will (Caleb McLaughlin) telling us of his life-long dream to play “Roarball,” where the fiercest animals compete in dangerous stadiums. The problem is, Will has been told that he’s too small to play. All he wants is a chance to show off his skills and prove to the world he’s got game. Respect for using “I Wish” by Skee-Lo with these choice lyrics: “Wish I was a bit taller, I wish I was a baller.” Produced by Stephen Curry, it hits theaters in February.
The Threesome
Vertical
Trailer Agency: Seismic Productions
Connor (Jonah Hauer-King) flirts with Jenny (Ruby Cruz) to show Olivia (Zoey Deutch) that he’s a catch in this well-crafted rom-com promo. An impulsive night leads to a crazy-ass threesome where—wait for it—both women get preggo! Olivia’s summation of the crisis: “Why do you have to have the world’s most potent frickin’ sperm?!” The chaos continues when both women share the same baby doctor. In theaters Sept. 5.
Keeper
Neon
Trailer Agency: Requiem
This skillfully crafted piece opens with different women looking at the camera as if someone is flirting with them; a strange vocal chorus plays underneath. Next, the women appear annoyed, gesturing for someone to leave or giving them the finger. It ends with the group screaming as blood runs down their faces. The screen fades to black, and one woman says, “This place isn’t right for me.” In theaters Nov. 14
Tron: Ares
Disney
Trailer Agency: Wild Card
This one opens with Julian (Evan Peters) explaining that humans have forever wondered if there were other beings in the universe. His words wash over scary visuals and intense sound design. Julian then introduces Ares (Jared Leto), the ultimate soldier—strong, fast and intelligent. And btw, he’s an AI life form. Gillian Anderson’s character warns Julian that he’s delusional for thinking he’s in control. We find out that Ares is malfunctioning—and wants to live. Props for the sci-fi candy, cool action sequences and killer music from Nine Inch Nails. In theaters Oct. 10.
